Join Our Governing Board – Make a Difference in Special Education
Role: Co-opted School Governor (Voluntary position)
School Type: Special Educational Needs (SEN) Primary School
Location: The Birches Specialist Support Primary School, Newholme Road, West Didsbury, Manchester, M20 2XZ
Commitment: Approx. 6 –10 meetings per year + occasional school visits

The Birches Specialist Support Primary School is a warm, welcoming, and nurturing environment for children with a wide range of complex needs, including profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), severe learning difficulties, autism, and other special educational needs. We are currently seeking committed individuals to join our Governing Body and help shape the future of our school.

About the Role
As a school governor, you will be part of a team responsible for:
- Setting the school’s strategic direction
- Supporting and challenging school leadership to ensure high standards
- Overseeing the school’s financial performance
- Ensuring the school meets the diverse needs of its pupils
You don’t need prior experience in education—what matters most is your commitment, curiosity, and willingness to learn.
We Are Particularly Interested in Individuals With Experience In:
- Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or broader education
- Building and premises management
- Finance, HR, or Legal expertise
- Safeguarding or social care
- Community engagement or local government
- Health and wellbeing (including mental health)
- Fundraising

Time Commitment
This is a voluntary role. Governors typically attend 6–10 meetings per year (usually in the evenings) and visit the school occasionally during the day.
